The Division of Developmental Disabilities, New Jersey Department of Human Services, is the lead provider of community services and programs for people with developmental disabilities. The division offers work, education and day programs, case management, clinical services, family support and housing. Community Care Residences are provided when available for people with developmental disabilities who do not live with their families. Residences are screened, funded, licensed and monitored by the division. Skill Development Homes enable a person needing ongoing supervision to live with a care provider, who provides a specific training program to meet personal care, social behavior and health needs. Family Care Homes provide room, board and supervision. Group Homes are family-style households shared by six to eight adults who receive guidance and personalized training from full-time staff. Supervised Apartments are monitored by staff who visit daily and often live in the complex. Supportive Living places individuals in apartments without supervision on site, but offers needed services and on-call assistance. Independent Apartments provide monthly monitoring and 24-hour access to emergency assistance. Statewide Family Support Coordinator In-home respite services Division of HousingThe Division of Housing, New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, contains Elements that administer rental assistance, moderate rehabilitation of housing, relocation assistance, a family self-sufficiency program, emergency shelter grants and homelessness prevention PG programs. The division assists local groups to sponsor low- and moderate-income housing through programs that preserve, rehabilitate and expand the housing supply for low- and moderate-income families. The division also provides administrative grants to nonprofit organizations that are involved in the production of affordable housing. In addition, the division runs a fellowship program through which graduate students in architecture and engineering work with nonprofit housing agencies. Personal attendants provide nonmedical assistance, such as bathing, dressing, wheelchair transfer, meal preparation, shopping, laundry, household management and transportation. New Jerseyans with physical disabilities, ages 18 to 65, can apply for the PAS Program through their county's Office for the Disabled. Pennsylvania. Lift-equipped and kneeling buses, as well as accessible
rail stations, are important elements of New Jersey Transit's services to
people with disabilities.
Check bus timetables for trips marked "W" to denote lift-equipped
buses. Provide at least 24-hour advance notice to schedule a
lift-equipped bus on a commuterline. The Office provides financial and technical assistance to local park and recreation departments, as well as to private, non-profit agencies, that want to start or expand community recreation programs for people with disabilities. Recreational Opportunities Grants are a program in which the state awards $5 for every $1 appropriated by the county or municipality. Other programs administered by the Office of Recreation provide support to statewide athletics, in-service training and education to community recreation providers, and information on the availability of accessible recreation possibilities . Office of Recreation (609) 984-6654 Adult Protective ServicesAdult Protective Services helps adults who are being abused, neglected or exploited and cannot protect themselves. Trained workers from local programs respond to requests for help by making a personal visit and finding ways to reduce the risk of harm. Every effort is made to maintain people in their own homes. The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, through its Division on Aging, has entered into agreements with local public and private agencies in each county to make adult protective services available statewide. Adult Protective Services are available to New Jersey residents, 18 or older, who are abused, neglected or exploited; who have cognitive or physical disabilities; and who live in their own home or apartment, or with others in private residences in the community.
